Our Story

Crafting a Legacy of Home

Hello and Welcome. My name is Robert Garren, and I’m the owner and founder of Idlewild Furniture Company.

A Return Home

Idlewild Furniture Co. started with a return home.
After more than a decade working in fine woodworking and furniture while living in Colorado, my family and I moved back to the mountains of Western North Carolina — back to the place and traditions that shaped us. My people have lived in Southern Appalachia for generations — people who built their lives with their hands and passed down knowledge not just through words, but through work.

Our Roots

Idlewild Furniture Company was born from that inheritance.
Rooted in Appalachian craft, we build furniture that feels anchored — to place, to memory, to meaning. We believe the objects that surround us shape how we live and how we feel. They hold stories. They create a sense of home.

How We Build

At IFC, we’re not chasing trends. We’re building pieces meant to last.
Drawing inspiration from Scandinavian and Danish Modern design alongside Appalachian heritage and culture, each piece is thoughtful, each material chosen with care, each detail a testament to the integrity of the craft. Whether custom or part of our curated line, our furniture is made to be lived with, loved, and eventually passed on.

Looking Ahead

As we grow, we hope not only to furnish homes — but to help people explore how they connect to them and express themselves through them.

This is our way of crafting a legacy of home.
Thank you for joining us — we’re glad you’re here.

“…what we build is not an end in itself, not an object to be admired in a vacuum or to be placed on a pedestal, but that it has to be something that works for a living. I don’t expect my furniture to be the star of the show or to shout to draw attention to itself, but I do expect it to do its job well and add a quiet soundtrack to its surroundings.”– Michael Pekovich, The Why and How of Woodworking
